REIMUN- Report from the Secretariat

On Saturday 7th October, 21 LEH girls attended the Reigate Grammar School MUN, representing the delegations of Yemen, Syria, Gabon, Ukraine, Belarus and Israel. They received numerous awards including a highly commended award, a distinguished delegate award and 2 best delegate awards.

Being the first conference of the year, many pupils who are new to MUN get involved in ReiMUN each year as well as those who regularly partake in it. MUN offers a great opportunity to students to get involved in global issues and current affairs, from the point of view of a diplomat. The pupils debated topics including the Reliability of the Banking Sector, Abortion Rights, Protecting Indigenous Communities, Climate Refugees and Medical Tourism. On the Security Council, delegates discussed the question of the Intervention in Ukraine and the question of Financing Terrorism.

On the DISEC committee we debated the Question of Civil War in Yemen and the Question of the Total Disarmament of Weapons of Mass Destruction. These were interesting topics that made for lively debate and gave us a chance to research in more depth certain areas of the topics, in particular the history of the Yemen Civil War and the other forces in play. Some memorable moments were forming an alliance with the delegate of Iran to take down a resolution with opposing views and the good natured points of order that came with certain delegates more humorous approaches. All in all it was a fantastic day, full of engaging and fruitful debate.

All delegates demonstrated excellent debating skills, forming convincing arguments and demonstrating diplomacy throughout the conference. Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to Reigate Grammar School for having us.
