WESMUN - A Report from the Secretariat

On the 15th and 16th of March, 13 eager students travelled to Westminster School for the highly anticipated WESMUN conference. The event began with an inspiring speech from Vince Cable, who highlighted pressing global concerns for future generations, including the resurgence of Donald Trump, the growing significance of diplomacy and cooperation, and the rise of China and India. His thought provoking insights left us eager to engage in the debates ahead. Following the opening speech, delegates dispersed into their respective committees to begin lobbying. The conference was filled with dynamic and productive discussions on a wide range of topics, from assisted dying to the ongoing civil war in Sudan. LEH delegates made significant contributions, submitting amendments, delivering compelling points of information, and successfully passing several resolutions. WESMUN balanced rigorous debate with moments of humour and spontaneity. In SOCHUM, Pakistan dramatically declared war on Mozambique and all nations harbouring child soldiers, an amendment that was ultimately vetoed by the UK in the Security Council, preventing an international crisis. Meanwhile, ECOFIN introduced a unique forfeit system for excessive use of personal pronouns, resulting in delegates performing interpretive dances. Over in DISEC, a delegate representing the USA took every opportunity to lavish praise on Elon Musk, adding an unexpected twist to discussions. The conference concluded with an intense General Assembly crisis debate, which began with the USA invading Greenland and escalated into the USA itself being conquered, with its states divided among the member nations. It was fantastic to see all LEH delegations actively participating, even in the fast paced environment of the General Assembly. A special congratulations goes to one of our L6 delegates, who was awarded Outstanding Delegate in the SOCHUM committee for her exceptional contributions.
