LEHMUN XVI: Conference Report

The 16th LEHMUN conference had been absolutely amazing and we could not have asked for more eager delegates! Friday started with an inspirational keynote speech from Alex Cadier, a correspondent and the UK Managing Director for NewsGuard, a company that rates the reliability of news websites. It was hugely engaging and prompted great discussion afterwards. This was followed by informal lobbying and policy statements. As we went around the committee rooms over the weekend, we saw some very interesting and heartwarming friendships and alliances being formed between delegates from different schools and even different countries! Despite being an early start, delegates were hugely enthusiastic on Saturday to send through their resolutions which were written to an impressive standard. Due to the high quality debate, very impassioned speeches and points of information, a plethora of resolutions were debated and a majority were actually passed, which is a testament to how thorough and well researched these resolutions are! Overall, the Saturday in Committees was a huge success that would not have been possible without the fantastic chairs, press team, approvals team and the secretariat, as well as the conference coordinators who have all worked hard to make it run so smoothly. The General Assembly was absolutely incredible. It has always been a dream of ours to chair the General Assembly and the debate surpassed our expectations. The way that people came together to quickly produce a very high quality resolution to some difficult problems was impressive, as well as the amendments and points of information that were made. We know how intimidating the GA can feel sometimes, but the enthusiasm of everyone was greatly appreciated. Everyone tackled the issues of the Gender Pay Gap and Equitable Access to Sustainable Technology and Resources for Developing Nations, which are difficult questions that are hugely relevant to today’s world, and in line with our conference goals of global equality and the empowerment of women. The power of dialogue, diplomacy and debate is crucial to tackling the ever growing challenges and tensions of our current world. Young people are the future and must learn to use our voices for good. We are proud to say that this was definitely the case this weekend. Just and powerful solutions to the world’s pressing issues were implemented, and this gives a great confidence in a more moral and open minded future. We hope that you have enjoyed the conference as much as we all have. Especially to those for whom this was their first conference, we hope that their experience of MUN will encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and continue to get involved in more conferences in the future. Finally, we would just like to thank Mr Agulian, Ms Farthing, Ms Campeanu and Mr Allen for all their hard work which was essential in producing such an amazing conference. We would also like to thank the Catering Team, Facilities team and especially Mr. Fatyga who fixed all the WiFi issues very swiftly.
